One of the best feelings is when you travel somewhere warm and you step outside of the airport and it's like 30 degrees warmer from where you came from. I arrived in Key West on Monday, April 23 and met up with Peter at this cute little motel called Ibis Bay Waterfront Resort (sort of a deceiving name).
The "resort" / motel had a never ending happy hour, a pool and a wild collection of parrots just perched outside the lobby. For dinner, Peter and I went to the main part of town called Duval Street. I can't quite place my finger on how to describe this place. It was definitely your typical seasonal ocean side town. There were these stunning mansions going along Duval Street with typical southern architecture, but they had all been converted into bars and restaurants. It's like all the beauty and history of this place was covered up by tourism. Everything felt like a cliché as we walked up and down Duval Street, but the atmosphere was fun and we ended up going to Sloppy Joe's to have a waaay to sweet Rita's margarita and watch a wanna-be cover band sing some country music.
The next morning met up with the group that would be on the birding boat trip out to Dry Tortugas. What a interesting bunch! It was almost more fun to observe them than to watch the birds. We went to Fort Zachary Taylor Historical State Park to go bird watching and I sort of wandered off to finally get a chance to stick my toes into the clear blue waters. Along the way I found this cool sign that pointed to all different cities in the world. It was like the perfect landmark to start this trip... First up, Dry Tortugas 70 miles!
